KRISPYSTART Support & Setup

A compact, wireless remote engine starter, warm-up controller and engine monitor. Control ignition, start, stop and a kill/aux output from your phone over Wi-Fi, watch live CAN data, and integrate with Home Assistant - no app to install.

GETTING STARTED

Getting Started.

Power it up, connect to its Wi-Fi, and open the control page.

01

Power

Power the unit from a 12 V constant supply.

02

Connect to Wi-Fi

On your phone, join the network Krispy_XXXX (XXXX = the last 4 of the serial). Password: GetKrispy.

03

Open the control page

The page should open automatically (captive portal). If it doesn't, browse to http://4.3.2.1/.

04

Accept the safety notice

Read and accept the safety notice on first run. Review the Safety & Liability section before use.

WIRING

Wiring & Pinout.

A 10-pin JST-XH main harness for control, plus two 4-pin CAN connectors.

Every relay/output pin is rated 0.5 A max. For higher loads, use the output to switch an external relay or solid-state relay (SSR).

10-Pin JST-XH (Main)

PinWireFunctionRating
1BlackIgnition Relay0.5A
2GreyIgnition Relay0.5A
3Purple12V Output0.5A
Connect pins 2 & 3 to give switched 12V power for ignition, then connect Pin 1 to your ignition-sense wire or ignition relay trigger. If your relay is ground-switching, connect Pin 2 to ground instead.
4BlueStarter Relay0.5A
5GreenStarter Relay0.5A
6Orange12V Output0.5A
Connect pins 5 & 6 to give switched 12V power for your starter control (ECU starter input or a starter-control relay). Do NOT connect this directly to the starter solenoid. If your starter-control relay is ground-switching, connect Pin 5 to ground instead.
7YellowAux / Kill Relay0.5A
8WhiteAux / Kill Relay0.5A
9Black12V Output0.5A
Connect pins 8 & 9 to give switched 12V power for your kill-switch relay, or use it as a general AUX output. If your relay is ground-switching, connect Pin 8 to ground instead.
Wire your kill-switch relay with ignition fed across the COM and NC terminals, so the kill switch "breaks" that connection when powered.
10Red5V Output0.5A
Optional 5V feed. Use it to send a 5V ignition-sense signal to your ECU, or to switch a low-current 5V device (e.g. an LED) on your AUX relay.

4-Pin JST-XH (CAN, ×2 daisy-chain)

PinWireFunction
1GreenCAN Low
2YellowCAN High
3BlackGround
4Red12V Constant

Two identical connectors are provided so the device can be daisy-chained into an existing CAN run.

CAN TELEMETRY

Choosing your ECU.

In Settings → ECU Type, pick your brand - the CAN bus speed is set automatically.

ECUBus speedNotes
Haltech1 Mbit/sFull data incl. engine state, neutral, reverse, CEL
Link500 kbit/s
OBD-II500 kbit/sPolled Mode 01 (incl. CEL via MIL)

MegaSquirt500 kbit/s
AEM Infinity500 kbit/s
Ecumaster EMU Black1 Mbit/s
None-Relay-only: ignition/start/stop/kill, no CAN required

If you don't have a supported ECU (or don't want CAN), choose None and the box runs ignition/start/stop/kill only, with all CAN-dependent settings hidden.

CONNECTIVITY

Wi-Fi, Home Assistant & Security.

Run it self-contained, or put it on your home network for always-on monitoring.

Connect to your home network

  1. Settings → Networking → Home Network Priority → On. Enter your Wi-Fi SSID and password, and a device name (default krispystart). Save.
  2. Disconnect from the KrispyStart AP. Within ~30 s the device joins your network; reach it at krispystart.local (or its IP, shown in the header).

Home Assistant (MQTT)

  1. Settings → Networking → Home Assistant → On. Enter your MQTT broker host/port and (optional) credentials.
  2. The device appears automatically under MQTT as KrispyStart - sensors and controls, no YAML.
  3. To let HA actuate the box (not just monitor), enable Allow Control (read-only by default).

Web UI password & engine lock

Settings → Networking → WebUI Password → On. When enabled, opening the page prompts for a login:

  • Username: your Wi-Fi network name (SSID)
  • Password: your AP password (default GetKrispy)

Lock requires the password to start the engine (web UI or Home Assistant); stopping is always allowed. Anti-theft kill can cut ignition via the aux relay whenever CAN activity is seen while armed.

Home networking, Home Assistant and default functions are disabled by default. Use care when enabling them, and always change the default password to prevent unauthorised access to your vehicle's controls.

FIRMWARE

Downloads & Updates.

Update over Wi-Fi from the web app - your settings are kept.

LATEST RELEASE

Latest Firmware

Released 2026
Firmware Portal

About updates

  • OTA updates flash over Wi-Fi and keep your settings.
  • Register your unit in the portal with its serial & purchase date.

Update via Web UI (OTA)

  1. Open the firmware portal and download the latest *_OTA.bin file for your unit.
  2. Settings → Firmware → Firmware Update in the KrispyStart web app.
  3. Choose the *_OTA.bin file and upload.
  4. The device flashes and reboots - your settings are kept. Do not cut power during the update.

Keep power on throughout the entire update. A power interruption during flashing can corrupt firmware - use USB Recovery to restore it.

TROUBLESHOOTING

USB Recovery & Factory Reset.

The supported way to recover a forgotten Wi-Fi / web password.

Flashing the Recovery image over USB wipes all settings and reverts the device to its defaults (Krispy_XXXX / GetKrispy). Registered users can flash directly from the browser via the secure firmware portal: connect via USB-C, no software required.

TROUBLESHOOTING

FAQ.

No live data / "no data"

Check the ECU Type matches your ECU; CAN High/Low aren't swapped; the bus is powered; and the CAN ground is connected.

Can't see the Wi-Fi network

Confirm it's powered from 12 V. After a recovery the SSID returns to Krispy_XXXX.

Forgot the password

Perform a USB recovery (factory reset) - it reverts to Krispy_XXXX / GetKrispy.

Start button does nothing

A safety interlock may be blocking it (in gear / not neutral / low battery / no fuel pressure / moving), or Lock is on - the status line shows the reason.

Engine won't crank on Start

Never connect to the starter solenoid directly - verify the starter output drives your starter-control relay or ECU input.

Device not in Home Assistant

Confirm it's on your home network, the MQTT broker host/credentials are correct, and the broker (e.g. Mosquitto) is running.

krispystart.local won't resolve

Some networks block mDNS. You may need to scan for the device on your local network using an IP scanner.

Higher-current accessory chatters/fails

Outputs are rated 0.5 A - switch an external relay or SSR for larger loads.

IMPORTANT

Safety & Liability.

KrispyStart can remotely start and stop your vehicle's engine and switch ignition / starter / kill circuits. Incorrect wiring, configuration or use can cause serious property damage, injury or death - for example starting the vehicle in gear, cranking near the driveline, or cutting power while moving.

Always verify your wiring and safety interlocks (neutral / no-start-in-gear / oil pressure) and test carefully before relying on the box. Never operate it while driving.
